Alliance expansion across North America and Europe in 2015;
Led by a visionary board of directors from the energy ecosystem;
The Real Estate Standards Organization (RESO) joined the Alliance to leverage Green Button standards for real estate applications;
Green Button Download My Data (DMD) Certification Program launched by UL; and 
Leading the Green Button initiative forward through education, marketing, technical training and Green Button certification.
 
Keep an eye out for the Green Button Alliance January Newsletter, which will be chock-full of new developments to help ring-in 2016!  The next in-person Green Button Alliance board meeting and first member meeting will be held during DistribuTECH, February 9-11, times and meeting locations to be announced.

Our members are also using Green Button data in powerful SaaS platforms and in feature-rich mobile and solar applications, and more applications are in development. - [Press Release \| GBA Announces GB DMD Testing & Certification Program](/content/news/press-release-gba-announces-gb-dmd-testing-and-certification-program.html): The Green Button Alliance (GBA), which fosters the development, compliance, and wide-spread adoption of the Green Button standard, today announced the launch of its Green Button Download My Data (DMD) Testing and Certification Program.  The new Green Button Testing and Certification Program is designed to support and accelerate the development, deployment, and broad adoption of standardized, interoperable Green Button solutions.  By certifying their Green Button offerings, utilities, energy service providers, and solution providers, can be confident their Green Button implementations comply with enhanced Green Button standards and are fully interoperable with other independently developed Green Button services and applications.  In addition, a "Green Button Certified DMD" mark on an energy provider's website assures consumers and application developers that they can rely on the data they receive.  Green Button Certified DMD offerings will enable a broad ecosystem of compatible and interoperable products, help consumers identify and use the solutions best-suited for their energy-efficiency goals, and significantly increase the market proliferation and adoption of Green Button technologies.

"Currently, there are over 150 utilities and service providers committed to providing customers with their own energy data in a standardized format; and ultimately, there are expected to be thousands of Green Button implementations, services, and applications in the international Green Button ecosystem," said Donald F. Coffin, Technical Manager, Green Button Alliance.  "Testing and certifying Green Button products for compliance to the Green Button standard enables Green Button developers worldwide to work from a common ground, significantly reduces development time and costs, and heightens consumer engagement by empowering them with solutions that work-together seamlessly to enable them to efficiently manage their own energy consumption."

The Green Button Alliance is now accepting applications for certification of Green Button Download My Data (DMD) implementations from energy service providers.  It is also developing the ability to provide certification of Green Button Connect My Data (CMD) implementations to energy service providers later this year.  The Green Button Alliance's DMD test suite utilizes existing, enhanced standards and technology from the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB).  The Green Button Alliance offers and administers testing through founding member UL's test laboratories.  The Green Button Alliance website enables members and non-members to list certified offerings and allows energy customers to easily locate providers that have Green Button Certified DMD solutions.  A Green Button Certified DMD graphic mark on an implementer's website will further assure developers and customers that an implementation has indeed been tested to be compliant and will provide consistent Green Button data.

On 01 November, the government of Ontario, Canada announced it is requiring nearly all regulated electricity and natural gas utilities provincewide to provide standards-based Green Button energy data to their customers within twenty-four months, by November 2023. Ontario's Green Button requirement went into effect on 01 November, following the passage of Ontario Regulation 633/21: Energy Data, which was filed on 02 September, 2021. The regulation applies to 60+ utilities, and covers approximately 5 million electric meters and approximately 3.5 million gas meters.
Ontario is the first province to empower energy consumers with easy, digital access to Green Button -standardized energy data and the ability to authorize to securely share those data with third-parties of their choosing, helping Ontarians to make informed decisions about their energy consumption and manage their energy costs.

Ontario’s Minister of Energy, Todd Smith, made the announcement at GBA member London Hydro’s Green Button Innovation Centre in London, Ontario, where he was joined by the Mayor of London, Ed Holder; the CEO of London Hydro, Vinay Sharma along with members of its Board; and representatives from Enbridge Gas; Festival Hydro; ENWIN Utilities; Oakville Hydro; University of Western Ontario; Ontario’s Electricity Distributors Association (EDA); and the Atmospheric Fund, among others. Among the benefits of utility customer access to standardized energy data, Minister Smith noted studies have found that easy access to Green Button -standardized energy data can help consumers make informed decisions and achieve energy savings of up to 18 percent. Mayor Holder noted that Green Button platforms will help utilities and their customers gain the benefits from the investment in smart meters, as well as help utilities to become more open by unlocking the value of these data. Sarah Van Der Paelt of GBA member Enbridge Gas shared the utility's support of Green Button and highlighted a current innovative pilot project—a hybrid heating system with smart controls—that leverages Green Button data provided by London Hydro.

London Hydro has offered its customers access to their standards-based Green Button energy data since 2016. Of Ontario's Green Button regulation, London Hydro CEO Vinay Sharma commented, “The Green Button standard ushers utilities into the modern technology era of open utilities, increased customer choice, and uniform energy management services for the benefit of customers." He continued, "Indeed, Green Button will manifest the true benefits of smart meter systems for customers.”  (2,195 words)

The utility will now be able to provide this information to its customers enabling them to easily access and efficiently manage their own resource consumption while opening opportunities for application vendors.

The Green Button Alliance's Green Button Testing and Certification Program is designed to support and accelerate the development, deployment and adoption of compatible, interoperable Green Button solutions. Certification broadens the Green Button ecosystem and increases the market potential for vendor products. The Alliance's technical staff worked with London Hydro during the certification test preparation, and Alliance founding member UL, a global leader in testing and certification services, conducted the Green Button DMD certification of London Hydro's implementation.

"London Hydro is taking a leadership position by effectively leveraging the full capabilities of the Green Button standard and by becoming the first utility to complete the UL certification process for electricity, natural gas, and water," said Barry Haaser, Executive Director, Green Button Alliance. "This certification validates the certification process and demonstrates the ability of the Green Button standard to not only empower utility customers with their electric usage data, but with their natural gas and water usage data as well."
